Innovations in Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) Caregiver Support Programs: Innovative Community Strategies

This event will build upon the information delivered in the Resources for Integrated Care (RIC) September 2022 webinar titled: Innovations in Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) Caregiver Support Programs: Building and Leveraging Support Systems. This webinar will continue to explore innovative ways that health equity and caregiver support are addressed across ADRD programs supporting dually eligible people living with ADRD. The event speakers will review community-level strategies to ensure adequate care for individuals living with ADRD and their caregivers.

By the end of this webinar, participants should be able to meet the following learning objectives:

1. Identify unique challenges and needs for the caregivers of those living with ADRD
2. Deliver innovative strategies and share examples of programs to support caregivers
3. Provide community-based strategies that support the unique needs of diverse or underserved communities and address health equity
4. Share lessons learned from implementation of community-based caregiver support programs over the past 5-10 years

Featured Speakers:

• Karen Rose:Dr. Rose is a professor at The Ohio State University, College of Nursing and the Director at the Center for Healthy Aging, Self-Management, and Complex Care. She has spearheaded several innovative programs in caregiver support, including a pilot program that utilizes acoustic monitors of caregiver intonation to determine when a caregiver is especially stressed. This monitor can provide well-timed mindfulness reminders via text messages to help deescalate tense situations in the home.
• Katie Scott: Ms. Scott is the president of CarePartners, an organization which focuses on providing resources, education, support and respite to family caregivers, and provides care to older adults with ADRD in the greater Houston area. CarePartners provides support through multiple channels including small group, large group, in-person, and virtual settings. This approach ensures they can meet individuals where they are and extend care into the community, not just in medical settings. Moreover, they maintain relationships with volunteers and community organizations to facilitate adult day programs.
• Caregiver Panelist: We are pleased to include a caregiver during the Panel Discussion and Question-and-Answer portions of the webinar. This first-person account will provide valuable insight regarding the impact of community strategies for caregiver support, detailing how these programs can provide meaningful relief in challenging circumstances. They will also speak to how caregiving can be a rewarding endeavor.

This webinar is intended for a wide range of stakeholders, including frontline workers, long-term support services (LTSS) providers and provider organizations (nursing facilities, adult day programs, assisted living facilities, home health care, and community-based agencies), and staff at Medicare-Medicaid Plans, Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans, managed LTSS plans, and consumer organizations interested in strategies and best practices for building and expanding ADRD caregiver support programs.
